Preheat the oven to 180C/350F. Grease a small loaf pan or line it with parchment paper.
In a bowl, mash the ripe bananas until mostly smooth, then whisk in the melted butter, sugar, egg, vanilla, and milk until well combined.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add the dry ingredients to the banana mixture and stir gently just until no dry flour remains. Fold in chopped walnuts if using.
Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely before slicing.
