Prepare the ingredients and equipment for making a basic white bread loaf.
Combine the flour, yeast, sugar and salt in a mixing bowl and stir to distribute the dry ingredients evenly.
Add the lukewarm water and softened butter, then mix until a rough dough forms and no dry flour remains.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, then shape it into a ball.
Place the dough ball in a lightly oiled bowl, cover and let it rise in a warm place until roughly doubled in size.
Gently deflate the risen dough, shape it into a tight loaf and place it in a lightly oiled loaf pan or on a baking tray.
Cover the shaped loaf and let it rise again in a warm place until puffy and slightly risen above the pan.
Bake the loaf in a preheated oven at about 375°F / 190°C until the top is golden and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Remove the bread from the oven, transfer it to a rack and let it cool completely before slicing.
